Getting Certified As A CNA In Michigan

To get your certified nursing assistant certification in Michigan it is imperative that first step that you need to take is completing a state approved CNA training course, which is offered at

After completing an accredited Michigan CNA certification course, you will then have to take and pass your certification exam, which consists of two portions, the first being a  multiple choice questions which you will need to get at least 80% of them correctly, the second portion is the clinical skills test where you will need to demonstrate competency in randomly picked patient care skills, where you will have three chances to get them correct and will need to demonstrate each one correctly. The certification test is administered by Prometric, and is known as the Michigan Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation test, where you will have 3 chances to pass the test, which you must wait 14 days to retake if one doesn’t pass the first time. There are 20 different regional test sites that Prometric has that are spread accross the state, which allow one to be in driving distance come test day. Upon passing the certification exam, you will get your Michigan nurse aide certification in the mail, enabling you to work as a CNA anywhere in the state.

Renewing CNA Certification

Once you have obtained your CNA certification  you will have to apply for recertification every 2 years. In order to be eligible for recertification, you must have worked a minimum of 8 consecutive hours during the 2 years, which was work that you were paid for, not volunteer. You are also give a 60 day grace period which starts after the 2 years are up where you can get your 8 hours and still be eligible to recertify. Although if the CNA who is applying for recertification has committed an act of patient neglect like neglect or abuse, they will not be allowed to recertify. The process of recertification is done when the Michigan CNA Registry sends out recertification forms, which usually happens 60 to 90 days before ones 2 years are up.

Apply For Reciprocity In Michigan

If you happen to be a CNA in another state other than Michigan and are looking to get your  CNA certification in Michigan, you can do so by filling out a reciprocity form that comes from both Michigan’s Nurse Aide Registry as well as your currents states registry. Once Michigan’s Nurse Aide Registry verifies that you have met requirements and have a good employment record, you will be able to sit for Michigan CNA certification exam without having to take a CNA course.
